History

Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action.

The first home built in Kootenai County by Habitat for Humanity of North Idaho was completed in 1992. Since then, donors and volunteers have helped to construct 27 homes in Athol, Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, Post Falls, and Rathdrum.

Habitat selects homeowner candidates without regard to age, gender, marital status, race, national origin, handicap, or religion. Family selection is based on need, ability to repay the interest-free mortgage, and willingness to partner with Habitat. Partnering requires that families dedicate hundreds of hours of labor as "sweat equity" into building their own homes and the homes of others.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide funds and materials to build Habitat houses. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with the qualified families working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent, affordable houses. We welcome volunteers and homeowners of all ages, faiths, and skill levels.
